Nearly 10 years ago, in 2004, the first nucleus of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) began following the al-Tawhid wal Jihad [Monotheism and Jihad] group led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Al-Zarqawi had declared allegiance to al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, making ISIL an arm of al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia.
